Reproductive health of trans/gender-diverse people

We explore the needs and experiences of transgender/gender-diverse people and healthcare experts regarding reproductive health, develop recommendations for reproductive healthcare and create a training programme for healthcare professionals.

Project description

Reproductive health of transgender/gender-diverse people is very under-researched and healthcare services are currently not well prepared to address their needs. We explore the reproductive healthcare needs and experiences of trans and gender-diverse people, their peers and parents, as well as of healthcare professionals, and develop recommendations, patient decision aids and continuous medical education programmes to address this gap in Switzerland and beyond.

Research aim

The aim of our research is to fill gaps in evidence of the reproductive health experiences and needs of trans and gender-diverse adolescents and adults and enhance their representation in surveys on reproductive issues. Moreover, we seek to support the development of best practice and inclusive reproductive healthcare for trans and gender-diverse people in Switzerland by building a community of practice.

Purpose

Surveys on reproductive health needs, including fertility preservation, contraception, pregnancy, birth, breast-/chest-feeding, family-building, psychosocial support, abortion care and cervical/prostate cancer screening show quite a low quality of person-centred care for trans and gender-diverse people in general and regarding reproductive health in particular. By formulating recommendations and establishing training programmes, we hope to foster gender sensitivity in healthcare.
