Inclusive healthcare for perinatal depression

Early treatment of perinatal depression facilitates recovery. However, Switzerland lacks a transdisciplinary approach based on the needs of parents. This project aims to develop an inclusive Swiss healthcare model and clinical practice guidelines.

Project description

Perinatal depression affects both birthing (typically mothers) and non-birthing (typically fathers) parents and is a significant mental health issue. In Switzerland, there is no standardised practice for the detection or treatment of this condition, especially for fathers, single parents and families within the LGBTIQ+ community. The project will address these gaps by developing a gender-sensitive healthcare model and clinical practice guidelines for perinatal depression in Switzerland.

Research aim

Our aim is to investigate the specific health needs and help-seeking behaviours of parents from various family structures, as well as the perspectives of healthcare professionals regarding potential barriers to healthcare provision. Stakeholders will collaborate to develop solutions and service models, which will be iteratively tested and refined. Further, we will adapt existing international clinical guidelines for perinatal depression to sex- and gender-specific needs and to the Swiss context.

Purpose

Expected outcomes of the project include an inclusive care model adapted to the Swiss context that addresses the needs of all parents and family types. Also, we will establish a central digital platform to ensure broad access to services and draw up high-quality clinical guidelines to support clinicians in treating perinatal depression. A community of practice will enable ongoing collaboration between healthcare professionals and user associations to sustainably improve care.
